There is not such a cradle of democracy upon the earth as the Free Public Library, this republic of letters, where neither rank, office, nor wealth receives the slightest consideration.
  - Andrew Carnegie

I think the health of our civilization, the depth of our awareness about the underpinnings of our culture, and our concern for the future can all be tested by how well we support our libraries.
   - Carl Sagan

The easiest and most affordable way to show your appreciation for the Library and the services we offer is by becoming a monthly donor to the Library's Endowment Fund. You will make a lasting difference by providing reliable support that ensures that Middleton continue to have access to free books, materials, and educational programs.

Help Your Library Continue to Grow
In 1926, members of the Middleton's Progressive Women's Club decided that Middleton should have a library, which started out with books that each member donated. They placed the books on a single shelf in the dry goods section of the Burmester-Kruse General Store. The population of Middleton then was 900.
Now the library has grown into a full-service, 32,000-square-foot facility, a busy community resource that offers diverse resources and services to area residents of all ages: books, magazines, newspapers, audiovisual materials, preschool storytimes, after-school programs, a book discussion group, a computer lab, study rooms, meeting rooms and more. Middleton's current service-area population has grown to nearly 25,000.

Provide a Lasting Gift to the Library
The Middleton Public Library Endowment Fund was created to encourage private donations and bequests to further the excellence of the library's service program, which is considered one of the best in the nation according to Hennen's American Public Library Ratings®. A contribution to the Endowment Fund is a unique opportunity for you to help insure that high-quality library service continues to be a Middleton hallmark.

Choose Your Method of Giving
A gift of cash, securities, or property for immediate or future use by the library.
A bequest in your will or living trust to the Middleton Public Library Endowment Fund.
Beneficiary designations of life insurance or retirement plan proceeds.
Gifts with retained income for yourself and others.

Unrestricted gifts enable the library to consider its needs and to direct the earnings from these gifts where they are most needed. You may also specify the purpose of which earnings from the gifts are to be used, as long as that purpose and use is consistent with the Library's goals and policies.

Tax Benefits
A gift to the Middleton Public Library Endowment Fund can provide substantial tax savings to the donor, which, in effect, reduces the cost of the gift. Here are some examples.
Savings in income taxes by gifts of cash, security or property made during this fiscal year.
Savings in inheritance and gift taxes, testamentary trusts or gifts, or living trusts.
Savings in capital gains taxes when gifts of appreciated securities or other property are made.

Be sure to confer with your tax advisor or legal counsel to see whether a gift of this type may be of advantage to you. All contributions to the Endowment Fund are tax-deductible.
