For a portion of the day, our public computers are being put to use; all running folding-at-home-logo – Folding@homeFolding@home, a distributed computing project for performing molecular simulations of protein dynamics.  Current projects using the combined power of this “hive supercomputer” aid in COVID-19 research, as well as cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other drug studies.  We have around 200 CPU cores running on the project.

Recently, Folding@home has announced that cumulative compute performance of systems participating in the project has exceeded 1.5 ExaFLOPS, or 1,500,000,000,000,000,000 floating point operations per second. This level of performance is by an order of magnitude higher than that of the world’s most powerful supercomputer.
