Part of the Library's Moneysmart Middleton series. Financial advisers provide a great service in helping people reach their financial goals. However, not all advisers are the same, and not all of them always have the client’s best interest in mind. This presentation will provide participants with some knowledge on what to look for when selecting an adviser; some basic questions they can ask to ensure the adviser is adding value for them; some research-based evidence on how financial advisers perform; and some simple finance advice that could help some participants manage their own finances and/or save on advising fees. Dr. Arjan Premti is an Assistant Professor of Finance at University of Wisconsin – Whitewater. After graduating from Menomonee Falls High School, he went on to study Finance, earning a Bachelor’s degree, a Master’s degree, and a Ph.D., all in Finance. Arjan came to the U.S. alone at the age of 17, speaking broken English, and had only $1,000 with him. The financial knowledge he gained through his education and personal experiences helped him complete 10 years of university education and manage to graduate with $0 in debt. Given his experience, he is passionate about helping others reach their financial goals, and commonly shares financial planning advice with his students and his friends. Arjan currently teaches courses related to Banking, Financial Markets, International Finance, and Capital Budgeting. His research has been published in several journals, including The Journal of Corporate Finance, Financial Review, International Review of Financial Analysis, and Quarterly Review of Economics and Finance.
